Howdy Hypsters! WOBWED on a Thursday? Sometimes it happens! This week we start off with a classic tune from Mr. Adegbenga Adejumo aka Benga from Dairy of an Afro Warrior, his second full length album. We then move to a more recent sound in the form of Street Lurkin, an Atlanta based duo that “set out to turn dance floors into mosh pits”. From there we head to the gnar side of the wobble with a track from Subhuman Records member Bare, which was released as part of his most recent EP – Ursa Major. For the last track we have a rare dubstep release from THF favorite Drop The Lime in the form of a remix of an AC Slater record. And as usual we have DJ Heartburn’s Picks of the Week!

Simplicity has never been quite this tasteful until SBTRKT came into my life. Nor have a heard an artist whom presents such playful focus, a driven sense of happiness and calm. Such an open mindset allows for life to be lived with positive purpose, a mindset this London producer encourages with every track off of his self titled LP. The element of his music that stands out the most to me though is not the rhythmic, earthy pulse of his beats, but his capturing of vocals. Wow, that is almost all I can say. The vocals are crisp, full, and hauntingly beautiful.

“Hold on” has such chilling lyrics; as he says the phrase “coldest stare”, you feel a chill run through your body. The mallet bass rattles my head into a steady sway as vocal harmonics massage my ears.

“Pharoahs” is my favorite track off of his latest album. Its perfect for a sunny day, rolling down the windows and cracking a smile as its minimal happy vibe brushes across your skin.

“Wildfire” is just straight nasty. For this track, you must take your car and lower it to scrapping status. Little Dragon’s (who I’ll do a write up on next week) lead singer throws down some sassy swagger in every line of her crooning, backed by a mobster bass/lead combination.

There’s nothing like a rooftop party in the sun…especially when you combine it with the best music, good looking people, tight friends and cocktails. That is what I was able to experience this last Sunday May 13th at the Standard Hotel in downtown LA for Culprit Sessions with The Martinez Brothers, Droog and Nikko Gibler.

As the reputation of this party is growing and summer is well on it’s way, the line was already around the block at 12pm with the party going from 1pm-8pm. Nikko Gibler had a nice warm-up, Droog (always good) with a wide range set as the party got started. By the time The Martinez Brothers hit the decks the rooftop was in full swing with a packed dancefloor . X HEATESCA
